"Lady Macbeth"
The original is "Macbeth"
by William Shakespeare
This play consists
of five scenes as follows:
(1)
The Letter
Macbeth,
Thane of Glamis, is Scotland's
greatest hero, one of the king's
most
trusted generals. For Lady Macbeth, however, this is not enough. She covets for
her husband a still higher position. One day she receives a letter from her
husband that makes her believe that her ambitions for her husband can at last
be realized. On his way home from a battle, Macbeth encounters three witches.
They prophesy that he will become Thane of Cawdor, and thereafter, King of
Scotland. At first, Lady Macbeth cannot believe this, but when she discovers
that the first part of this prophesy has been realized, she becomes firmly
convinced that it all will become true. She devises a plot for her husband to
assassinate the king, and urges him to carry this out.
(2)Welcoming
King Duncan to Glamis
Castle
Macbeth
balks at the idea of assassinating the king to further his career. His wife
accuses him of cowardice and persuades him to finish what they have started.
(3)Assassination
of King Duncan
After
killing the king, Macbeth is stunned by the enormity of the crime he has
committed. He returns from the king's chambers in a daze, mistakenly bringing the
blood-stained daggers with him. Lady Macbeth snatches the bloody daggers from
her husband and returns to the king's bedchamber. Thus her hands too become
stained with blood, but in contrast to her husband, Lady Macbeth believes that
if only she washes her hands well enough, she can wash away the deed.
(4)The
Banquet
Macbeth
is hailed as the new king of Scotland,
at a banquet given in his
honour.
If they can only manage to finish this banquet successfully, thinks Lady
Macbeth, her husband will truly be seen as "The King," both in word
and deed. But Macbeth begins to panic as he is seized by fear, and finally it
seems as though any minute he will lose control and in his madness announce to
the roomful of well-wishers the former king's real fate. Lady Macbeth sees that
her husband is now beyond her control, so she announces that the banquet is
over and asks all the guests to leave.
All
is lost. No stately honour, no love, no respect, no loyality...not even
Friendship
remains.
(5)The
Sleepwalker
Lady
Macbeth begins to walk in her sleep. Every night she wanders about the castle
grounds in her sleep.
