Surveys have found that nationwide Asian women undergo tests for cervical cancer at lower rates than other populations, and a large number of Korean-American women are unaware of the Pap test, which has decreased deaths from the disease by 75% in recent years, the Inquirer reports. According to the National Cancer Institute, cervical cancer is five times as prevalent among Vietnamese women in the U.S. as white women because many Vietnamese women are reluctant to undergo tests for the disease. The actual number of cervical cancer cases among Asian women in the U.S. remains undetermined, but health care workers believe the problem is steadily growing, the Inquirer reports.
