Penn State researchers, led by research associate Amanda Hanford, set out to create a metamaterial that could scatter sound waves underwater. Sonar works by sending vibrations through the water, which bounce off a target and back into a detector. A specifically-designed metamaterial could potentially deflect the waves so they dont return to the detector. This week, the researchers debuted their attempt at creating a sound-scattering metamaterial at the 175th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in Minneapolis. Chopping Mall has earned its cult status for many good reasons. Its fast-paced, it has a totally 1980s setting, it has one of the best exploding heads in all of horror cinema, and its villains are killer robots. Most of the movie is running and screaming, but the kids dont go down easily. For one thing, this mall has a sporting-goods store called Peckinpahs, which allows them to build up a surprising amount of firepower to hold off the laser-blasting robots 8230; or killbots, to borrow the name of one of Chopping Malls original titles. Killbots actually makes way more sense; the movie contains no actual chopping, though it does contain bare breasts and badassery, two important cornerstones of 1980s B-movies.
